Historical Voices

CRIS Radio collaborates with libraries, historical societies, and colleges, to bring history back to life.

CRIS Radio makes history come alive with audio versions of archival records and historical documents generally not accessible to individuals who are blind or print challenged.

During the past decade, CRIS has teamed up with historians, archivists, archaeologists, and anthropologists to improve access to archival records and historical documents for individuals with print disabilities. These recordings also are used as an educational tool for typical students.

The audio production process is lengthy as many documents were handwritten and had to be transcribed into typewritten text before being assigned to CRIS Radio volunteer narrators for recording. Additionally, a pronunciation guide of uncommon words was developed to assure accuracy.
